A good drywall patch disappears; a bad one shows up in every light
Patching drywall is easy to do badly. A hole is filled, a bit of paint is dabbed on and the spot stays visible forever, because patches fail at the last two steps: matching the surrounding texture and painting so the sheen blends. Light raking across a wall shows every ridge, halo and mismatch.
The patches we are asked about most are small ones: doorknob holes, anchor holes from removed shelves and TVs, dings from moving furniture, cracks at door corners, and the cutouts left by relocated fixtures or old water damage. Bigger repairs, such as a section of wall opened up for plumbing or electrical work, follow the same steps with backing and more coats.
Patching sits naturally with painting, and it is the step that decides whether the paint looks professional. Our project photos include walls at the finishing stage, smooth and ready for primer, as well as a large interior wall with a section freshly rolled and patched.

Signs you need a drywall repair
Small defects get more noticeable once you start looking:
- Holes from doorknobs, wall anchors, TV mounts or moved furniture.
- Cracks running from the corners of doors and windows, or along seams in a ceiling.
- Nail or screw pops, where fasteners push through the paint in small bumps.
- Cutouts left behind after a plumber, electrician or contractor opened the wall.
- Old water stains or soft drywall after a leak that has already been fixed.
- A remodel or tenant turnover where patches have to disappear before repainting.
How a drywall patch is done
- Assess the damage and find the cause
We check how large the damage is, whether the drywall is still sound, and whether a moisture source or settling crack needs to be addressed first.
- Cut back to solid drywall
Loose edges and crumbling material are cut out, and larger holes get a backer or a drywall patch piece fastened in.
- Tape and apply joint compound
Mesh or paper tape bridges the seam, and joint compound is applied in thin coats and feathered wide past the edge of the patch.
- Sand smooth between coats
Each coat is allowed to dry and sanded so the surface blends flat with the wall, with no ridges or halos.
- Match the texture
Orange peel, knockdown or other surface textures are recreated over the patch so it reads like the rest of the wall.
- Prime and paint
The patch is primed so it does not flash, then the whole wall is painted corner to corner for an even sheen.
What affects the cost of drywall repair
Price follows size, texture and access, not just how big the hole looks:
Number and size of repairs
A single nail hole is minimal, while several patches or a large cutout need more coats and more drying time.
Backing and framing
Large holes need backer boards or new drywall pieces fastened in before taping and mudding can begin.
Texture matching
Matching a heavy knockdown or orange peel texture takes more skill and time than a smooth wall.
Water damage
Wet drywall must be dry and the source fixed before patching, and badly damaged boards may need replacement.
Painting the full wall
Painting the entire wall corner to corner hides the patch better than spot painting, and adds to the scope.
Height and access
Ceilings, stairwells and high walls take longer to reach and finish.
Why choose De La Mora Painting for drywall repair
Repair and paint by the same person
The painter who patches the wall knows exactly how it will look once painted, so seams are never left to a second trade.
Texture matched, not just filled
We recreate the wall texture so the patch blends under real lighting, not just from across the room.
Honest about causes
If a crack keeps coming back or a stain points to a leak, you will hear about it rather than get paint over a problem.
Small jobs welcome
A handful of holes before moving out or after a remodel is a normal job here.

Where we do this work
Drywall repair is part of most interior and tenant-turnover work in San Jose, Campbell and Santa Clara. Once repairs are done, follow with interior painting, or see our ceiling texture work if the ceiling needs a matching finish.
Drywall Patch & Repair FAQs
How do you hide a patch on a textured wall?
The patch is finished flat, then the same texture, such as orange peel or knockdown, is applied over it and allowed to dry before priming and painting. Painting the whole wall corner to corner finishes the blend.
Can you fix a hole from a doorknob?
Yes. Small to medium holes are filled with a patch or backer and several thin coats of compound, then sanded, textured to match and painted. It is one of the most common drywall repairs.
My drywall has a water stain. Do you replace it or paint over it?
First the leak must be fixed and the drywall must be completely dry. Sound drywall can be stain-blocked and painted, while soft, bulging or moldy sections should be cut out and replaced. We check before deciding.
Do I need to repaint the whole wall after a patch?
Usually yes. Spot-painting a patch tends to flash because the sheen and color differ slightly from the aged paint around it. Painting the full wall from corner to corner gives an even result.
Why do cracks keep coming back at the corners of doors?
Corner cracks often come from normal seasonal movement. Properly taping and mudding the crack, and using flexible products where appropriate, reduces repeat cracks, but we will tell you if the crack points to something larger.
How long does joint compound take to dry?
Each coat needs time to dry before sanding, often several hours depending on thickness and humidity, so multi-coat repairs are usually spread over more than one visit.
