Texture hides flaws and finishes the ceiling

Ceiling texture is a spray-applied or troweled surface that gives drywall ceilings a consistent finish. Because drywall joints, screw heads and small imperfections show clearly on a flat ceiling in side light, texture is the standard way to make a ceiling look uniform without perfecting every seam. It also hides the transitions where repaired areas meet old ones.

The two textures most homes use today are knockdown and orange peel. Knockdown is sprayed on and then flattened with a trowel so it has soft, irregular peaks; orange peel is a finer, evenly dimpled spray. A third option, a smooth finish, takes much more labor because every seam and screw head has to be skim-coated and sanded until the surface is flawless.

Texture work usually comes after something else: removing a popcorn ceiling, adding a room or ADU, opening a ceiling for repairs, or fixing a water-stained section. Applying texture to an uneven surface, or over the wrong prep, shows. Gabriel prepares the surface first so the texture goes on evenly and the finished ceiling can be painted cleanly.

When a ceiling needs new texture

Texture usually goes back on in one of these situations:

  • The popcorn texture has been removed and you want a finished, modern look rather than a bare or smooth ceiling.
  • A repaired section of ceiling shows as a smooth patch against the surrounding texture.
  • You added a room, an ADU or new drywall and the ceiling needs a consistent finish.
  • A water stain was repaired and the area needs texture to blend with the rest of the ceiling.
  • The ceiling has visible drywall seams, screw heads or imperfections that paint alone does not hide.
  • You want an updated texture style such as knockdown instead of old heavy texture.

How ceiling texture is applied

  1. Check the ceiling surface

We look at the drywall condition, any repairs or skim coats, and how the existing texture looks, so the new texture blends.

  2. Mask walls, floors and fixtures

Texture spray travels, so walls, floors, windows and fixtures are covered with plastic and paper before any material is mixed.

  3. Prep and prime

Seams and patches are finished and sanded, and the ceiling is primed so the texture bonds evenly and dries at a consistent rate.

  4. Mix and spray the texture

Joint compound or texture material is mixed to the right thickness and sprayed on evenly with a hopper gun and compressor.

  5. Knock down or leave as orange peel

For knockdown, the sprayed texture is flattened with a trowel at the right moment, so the peaks soften; orange peel is left as sprayed.

  6. Dry, then prime and paint

The texture dries fully, then the ceiling is primed and painted, with edges cut cleanly at the walls.

What affects the cost of ceiling texture

Texture is priced by area and by how much prep the ceiling needs:

Ceiling square footage

Total ceiling area sets the base amount of material, labor and masking.

Texture style

A smooth skim-coated finish takes the most labor, followed by knockdown, then orange peel.

Condition of the surface

New drywall needs less repair than a ceiling with gouges, cracked seams or old water damage.

Matching existing texture

Blending new texture into an existing ceiling takes testing and care so the transition is not visible.

Masking and protection

Rooms with lots of furniture, built-ins or windows take more time to cover before spraying.

Paint included or separate

Texture plus prime and paint is a larger scope than texture alone.

Why choose De La Mora Painting for ceiling texture

Prep before texture

Seams, patches and priming are finished before any texture is sprayed, because that is what decides how even it looks.

Texture and paint together

One contractor sprays, finishes and paints the ceiling, which avoids gaps and timing delays between trades.

Match-or-update advice

We help you choose between matching your existing texture and moving to a cleaner style.

Part of a larger ceiling plan

Ceiling texture often follows popcorn removal or repair, and Gabriel handles all three steps.

Ceiling Texture FAQs

What is the difference between knockdown and orange peel texture?

Orange peel is a fine, evenly dimpled spray finish. Knockdown is sprayed with a heavier pattern and then flattened with a trowel, leaving softer, irregular peaks. Knockdown hides imperfections better; orange peel is more uniform.

Can you match my existing ceiling texture?

Often yes. We test the texture on a small area to match the pattern and thickness, which matters most when repairing a section next to an existing ceiling.

Do I have to paint the ceiling after applying texture?

Yes. Texture is primed and painted after it dries. Painting the full ceiling at once gives the most even finish and hides the blend between old and new areas.

How long should texture dry before painting?

Drying time depends on thickness and humidity. It is often at least a full day before priming, and longer in damp conditions, so we schedule painting after the texture is fully dry.

Can texture be applied over a popcorn ceiling?

Generally the popcorn needs to be removed first, or the surface needs a skim coat, so the new texture bonds evenly. We look at your ceiling and recommend the right approach before quoting.

Need a Ceiling Finished or Matched?

Request a quote and tell us about the ceiling. We will recommend a texture and handle the prep, spraying and paint.
